Today’s song is “DEEP” by Anni Pohto. The Helsinki, Finland singer, songwriter turns inward to face herself, finding strength enough to face the world on this revelatory track. With themes of healing, grit and empowerment are found within this track showing Anni’s bold artistic persona.
Her music has roots in her childhood in Finlands as well as her life in New York and Boston. There she worked as a songwriter for artists and found herself as both a Berklee College of Music scholar and Master of Global Political Scient to-be. With all these experiences her music really breaks the mold.
Her music combines influences from her Nordic homeland along with 90’s hip hop, and a little 21st-century pop music. She is often referred to as “the female Jack Garratt” and “the Nordic Alicia Keys.”
According to Pohto, the song “tells a story about facing our inner darkness, and why that is crucial in order to find joy. Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world three times in a row. But against expectations, it’s not because Finns are overtly positive, but quite the opposite.”
“My voice, my piano, my beats.” That is all you need. With just a few notes this song will want to make you dive right in. Her cool piano and drum beats will infiltrate your mind and make you want to listen again and again.
This is the first single from Anni’s forthcoming concept album The Rising due out in late summer 2021. This is following her EP Redemption Street whose single “Stains” sprang her into the national spotlight when it was chosen as song of the week at YleX radio. She also garnered attention for her collaboration with acclaimed Finnish rapper, Pyhimys, co-writing and co-producing his album Medium.
