Backyard Super Heroes Bring the Ska-tastic Energy to Skanksgiving

Backyard Super Heroes lit up Skanksgiving’s return with a high-energy, horn-fueled set full of heart, humor, and unforgettable moments.

The Thanksgiving tradition of Skanksgiving made a thrilling return after a two-year hiatus, and Backyard Super Heroes delivered an unforgettable performance at the Starland Ballroom on November 30th.

Having previously featured them as a Song of the Day in 2020, we were eager to witness their high-energy live act. And boy, did they deliver! Their set at the Starland Ballroom was a whirlwind of infectious melodies, witty lyrics, and pure fun.

While the headliners were sure to bring a crowd, anyone who arrived early was treated to the energetic, high-octane set from this NJ-based nonet.

From the moment they opened with the irresistible “See This Thru,” the crowd was hooked. Josh’s inviting vocals and the band’s tight musicianship created a potent mix, with everyone moving and grooving. Songs like “Most of All,” “Mass Hysteria,” and “Going Nowhere Fast” showcased their ability to blend catchy hooks with thought-provoking lyrics.

To top it off, Backyard Super Heroes’ energy was palpable. The stage, packed with nine members, was a whirlwind of dancing and enthusiasm. A hilarious moment came during “Batshit Crazy” when someone came out dressed in a large dinosaur costume came on stage and started dancing, adding a touch of humor and excitement.

The mix of male and female vocals between lead vocalist Josh and vocalist Shelly created a perfect complement to the band’s powerful sound. They kept the crowd engaged, encouraging participation with claps and cheers. One particularly heartfelt moment came when rhythm guitarist Tam dedicated the set to his niece, who had recently been diagnosed with leukemia.

Another highlight of the set was during “Mass Hysteria” when they brought out reggae and ska singer Coolie Ranx, lead singer of Pilfers and also who is featured on the recorded track.

Their set, though just 25 minutes, left the crowd hungry for more after an explosive finale with “Face It.” The blend of relatable lyrics, riffing guitars, and powerful horns had everyone grinning and amped up as they left the stage.

If you’re looking for a band that can deliver both high-energy fun and meaningful lyrics, Backyard Superheroes is definitely worth checking out.
