Today’s song is “Forsythia” by Stephanie Catlett. The singer-songwriter hails from Iow City where she resides in a blue bungalow with her three cats.
Catlett’s lyrics explore the quiet spaces between separate lives and the sometimes-imperceptible cracks that appear when love and faith fall apart. She draws much of her inspiration from nature and the industrious, independent spirit of the plants and animals around us. Her songs are peopled with the lonely, the impetuous, and the flawed — and she attempts to tell stories that reflect the complicated nature of being a human on earth.
This track is off her debut EP Meet Me In the Dream. When describing the album Stephanie said it was an act of courage for her. “After a career as a marketing writer promoting others’ work, Meet Me In the Dream is the first project that I have created out of myself, completely from my own experiences and impressions. While the dream world of the album is one of false starts, missed chances and loss, there remains a core of resilience and persistence that hopefully won’t be overlooked by the listener.”
Catlett is a great storyteller painting a visual landscape with her poetic lyrics. The song opens with beautiful violin strings followed with happy drumming for an inviting and friendly sound that balances a folksy American blues with a little pop for good measure.
If you are looking to just chill out and forget about all that is going on around you this is a great song to listen to. With its soothing melodies and calming vocals, it will put your mind at ease with just a few notes.
