Today’s song is “Brand New” by Mauve. The Toronto native grew up inspired by theatrical performances before turning to her piano. From the age of 14, she has been a singer/songwriter composing all of her own music.
She takes inspiration from the deep and emotional vocals of Amy Winehouse and Sia and layers them with vulnerable lyrics and lovable tropical beats.
Her musical diversity comes from her home city of Toronto. It has provided her with many outlets and opportunities to explore different styles of music through its vibrancy and diversity.
“I see sound as having the ability to express feelings and connect people through the different colours of tone as well,” she continues. “When creating a song, it is like you are an artist with a paintbrush, combining different colours together and layering them to set a scene for someone else to imagine. It’s like you are painting, but with sounds.
This is the latest single off her debut EP Palette. “Brand New” is a funky track with chill pop beats that have a tropical flare of steady and melodic R&B.
The Canadian singer/songwriter has been garnering recognition. Mauve was nominated for a 2018 Niagara Music Award for “Best New Artist” and her single “Come Around” won top honors at the 2019 InterContinental Music Awards for “Best of North America.”
