Song of the Day: “Never too Much” by Secret Sound

Today’s song is “Never Too Much” by Secret Sound. Comprised of Kevin Hill, Adam Alexander, Dave Ferraro, Andy Feldman, and Bob Larsen, this quintet has been bringing their own blend of danceable, funky jams to our fans all over New Jersey and beyond. Based out of one of the Northeast US’s most vibrant music scenes, Asbury Park, NJ.

Secret Sound was born playing the dive bars and legendary clubs of New Brunswick, NJ, a college town that gave rise to many prominent rock acts. Their blend of rock, blues, funk and jazz was fermented in the seething cauldron that was the jam scene of the 1990’s. They have now become considered more of an Asbury Park band that is a fixture at the The Stone Pony. Since making that leap they have shared billings with iconic artists like Dickey Betts, Phish’s Jon Fishman, Dark Star Orchestra, Levon Helm and Johnny Winter.

This track is off the band’s debut EP which was released last month. The EP is a jam band fan’s dream. It features different takes on funk and rock; a hot-blooded funk tune in the tradition of James Brown (“I’ll Be Your Jungle Lover”), a dance song about archangels and sacred ambiguity (“Metatron”), and a psychedelic cowboy-story song that questions the norms of American traditions (“Largemouth Bass”).

Today’s song caught my ear as I listened to their EP. It reminded me of a slower Electric Six with a funky jam flare. Want to catch them live? The band will be playing a number of shows in NJ this spring including one at the The Wonder Bar on April 7th.
