Today’s song is “Rule Breaker” by Lauren Carter. The resonant vocalist, with a three-octave range began her music career in Chicago, studying music at Northwestern University.
Taking inspiration from artists like Kimbra and Tove Lo, Carter creates a sound that incorporates
dreamy pop melodies with a rock edge that makes for some saucy female empowerment. The scornful lyrics complement the infectious rhythm & blues piano melodies in which she gets the last laugh. Carter proclaims, “stick around and we can watch it burn, had your moment baby it’s my turn, I played the fool but now the table’s turned.”
This single was co-written and produced by Josh “IGLOO” Monroy, a longtime collaborator with Ludacris. “Josh wanted to turn my voice into another instrument, so he programmed synth sounds using my vocals. The additional sounds and vocals you hear are built off my singing,” explains Carter. “Rule Breaker” is off her upcoming EP, American Dream.
