When did they start?: 2010
Who are they?: An LA-based girl rock band consisting of Julia Pierce (lead vocals/guitar), Miranda Miller (guitar), Nia Lovelis (drums), and Rena Lovelis (bass player).
Why should you care?: These girls have crafted a sound that is wise beyond their years. They have played various festivals both in the US and Europe and have shared the stated with such notable bands as Foo Fighters and Smashing Pumpkins. With their refreshingly distinct rock rhythms they will stand out from the mass of pop and dance music to show that girls can still rock.
How Do They Sound?
“Let It Go”
“Raw.Real”
ESBMusic caught up with Rena and Nia from Cherri Bomb to talk about their musical influences, how the band came together, their new album, and what they are looking forward to this summer:
ESBM: How did you come up with your band name?
Rena: We were reading a book called Cherry Bomb, and although we had a list of 400 possible band names, we all couldn’t agree on one that felt right. We started saying maybe we should just name ourselves Cherri Bomb, after the book, since it felt powerful, and to the point. And we changed the “y” to an “i” just to make it our own!
ESBM: How did the band come together?
Nia: Julia was putting up fliers in music stores and I was searching online to find a band I could get involved with and bond to. I found one of the ads and met with Julia and the jam went amazing. Miranda sent in some videos of herself playing guitar and piano and singing. We knew it was meant to be. And then Rena, my sister, was playing guitar at the time and we asked her to be a temporary bassist until we found someone, but after a couple of
rehearsals we realized there was no one who would fit better than her! And that’s how it all came together!
ESBM: Who are you influences?
Nia: We all have vast influences. Rena and I have been around music our whole lives, and some of the bands and artists that have infected us are: Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Alanis Morissetee, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Filter, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Coldplay just to name a few.
ESBM: This May you will be playing Bamboozle. Have you ever played the festival before? What are you looking forward to?
Rena: We haven’t played Bamboozle before, but we’re really excited to go back to the east coast where we are all from, and play.
ESBM: Your debut album is coming out May 15th, what can expect of the release?
Nia & Rena: The album will definitely take you on a musical and emotional journey with us. We poured out hearts into this and hope it will inspire and excite people.
ESBM: You released a few songs, “Shake the Ground,” “Let it Go,” and “Raw.Real,” what will be your next single?
Nia: You’ll have to wait and see 😉
ESBM: You were recently signed to Hollywood Records. Are things any different being on a label?
Rena: Yes, you have a whole team of people behind you, supporting your effort
instead of doing it alone!
ESBM: You were picked by billy corgan to open for them on tour and also opened for Foo Fighters in Germany. What were those experiences like?
Rena: Wild and Surreal. Meeting the performers that you’ve been listening to your whole life, and having incredible conversations about life and music and being on the road is certainly transformative. You learn so much from being around genius like that.
ESBM: What are you plans for the summer?
Nia: Tour. Tour. Tour. and fight about boys 😉
ESBM: Any last words?
Nia: Yea, don’t take any wooden nickels 😉
