Orchestral indie rock band Hey Rosetta! comes from St. John’s, Newfoundland, the most easterly point in North America on the North Atlantic. Requiring a day-long drive and an overnight ferry ride just to get to the mainland, St. John’s offers relative isolation from the larger Canadian indie rock scene. With 2008’s Into Your Lungs. Hey Rosetta! toured Australia, China, Europe, the US and Canada. They earned a reputation for dynamic live performances and were shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.
Seeds, out February 15, is an album conceived while touring in support of Into Your Lungs over the last three years. It’s about depression, procreation, life on the road and the band’s itinerant lifestyle. “It’s about the power of the road trip; escape, rebirth through movement…and the rare moments of escape and empowerment you get while highwaying yourself from town to town,” says lead man Tim Baker. Seeds was recorded by Tony Doogan (Belle and Sebastian, Mogwai, Wintersleep) in Halifax, NS.
Listen to their stand-out track “Yer Spring” below. The song delves further into the malaise of the road. “A lot of the time we’re in bars. Even on nights off we often find ourselves there. I tend to wonder why. What are we looking for in such dank, pricey, poisonous places? I guess we were born at a time where religion cannot hold us…” But, as Tim says, “It’s not completely dark and resigned. [Yer Spring] ends with an appeal: the speaker shouts he is still ready to be lifted. I think we all are.”
