Rocking Under The Radar: I Hate Kate

With their lively dance beats, humorous, thought-provoking lyrics, and hearty rock edge; I Hate Kate has a sound that will make you stand up and take note. The band hails from Huntington Beach, California and is comprised of Justin Mauriello (vocals/guitar), Scott Hayden (bass) and Jeremy Berghorst (guitar). The trio formed in 2004 as a creative outlet for Mauriello who at the time was in the rap-rock group Zebrahead. Mauriello wound up leaving Zebrahead and took the new project on full time.

Since its inception, I Hate Kate has gained a large fanbase and toured extensively throughout the U.S. Canada, and Japan. They shared the stage with notable acts such as Social Distortion, Chevelle, Hot Hot Heat, The Bravery, The Living End, My Chemical Romance, Unwritten Law, and Shiny Toy Guns. In 2006, the band recorded 11 tracks at the home studio of Linus of Hollywood. Despite the low budget DIY recordings, the band proved their talents when their single “It’s Always Better (When I’m With You)” caught the attention of Denver radio station KTCL’s programming director. The single was added to the station’s rotation and quickly jumped to the Top 5.

On June 24, 2008 the band released their first full-length studio album entitled, Embrace The Curse. The album was produced by Mark Trombino (Jimmy Eat World, Blink-182, Sugarcult) and consists both new songs as well as remixed previous tracks. Early last year, the band recorded their latest album entitled Race To Red with producer Lee Miles (Tickle Me Pink, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Puddle of Mudd). This past January they released “Free Without You,” the first single and currently being offered as a free download.

Whether it is the vivacious, catchy pop rhythms, the delectable dance melodies, or the element of high-powered rock; there is something that stands out about I Hate Kate. One thing is for sure, the music speaks for itself. Embrace The Curse is 13 tracks of sensational body rocking grooves and a charming panache of 80’s dance. I Hate Kate is an exceptional band with music that is not only introspective, fun, and rocking, but never disappoints.

Standout Tracks: “I’m In Love with a Sociopath,” “Bed of Black Roses,” “Outta My Head,” and “Embrace The Curse”
