Rocking Under the Radar: Skindred

The rock music scene is home to an immeasurable number of bands and artists, the vast majority of which are not household names. In “Rocking Under the Radar,” I attempt to highlight one of these under-the-radar acts by applying a very basic investigative method. If you want a quick synopsis of a band or artist you may not know about, this is the place to look.

Band: Skindred

Where Are They From? Newport, Wales, UK

When Did They Start? 1998

Who Are They? Skindred is a self-described “Ragga metal” band from Wales. They’ve released three albums (their latest, Shark Bites and Dog Fights, was released last year) and have been a consistent touring band, both as a headlining act and as an opener for bands such as Korn, Papa Roach, and Disturbed.

Why Should You Care? Because it’s not too often that a band successfully combines reggae with metal/punk influences to craft such an alluring sound. In that spirit of reggae, Skindred is also a band that is not afraid to hit the listener with a sociopolitical message while keeping the music rocking right behind it.

What Do They Have to Say?

  • “Stand for something/or you’ll fall for anything” – Lyric from “Stand For Something”
  • “I love Skindred fans and even if you are not a fan but you come to see us and enjoy the show drop your inhibitions and rock out then that will do for me.” – Skindred’s lead singer, Benji, in an interview with www.rocksins.com
  • How Do They Sound?

  • “Nobody”
  • “Stand for Something”
