Socratic Played Maxwells

If you can’t handle the heat, don’t go to Maxwell’s in the winter. It’s so hot in there it is a little unbearable to watch a show. You can only stand so long and once the set is over you want to run out into the bar area. The only problem is that everyone else is doing the same thing and there are a ton of people standing in the walkway so it’s hard to get around. On top of that the kitchen is right by where the band room is so the area is a high-traffic zone with the waitstaff coming and going all night or at least until they stop serving food.

We had gotten there a little late and only catched a few bands, I felt bad but we were there mainly to see Socractic since the last time I went to see them I only heard them. We were lucky though becuase if we were any later we would have missed the show completely being that it sold out.

We saw the middle of The Embracers set. I really enjoyed their music. They had a southern, folky, rock sound which was very pleasing to the ear. The crowd was really into them and the lead singer had a really good voice.  After they finished their set, a large portion of the crowd had left. I was suprised by this since usually a lot of people come to see the main band.

Socratic finally came on around at 11:30. The start of their set was a little shaky. The music was too overpowering and you couldn’t really hear the vocals of lead singer, Duane Okun. Luckily, though this subsided with the next couple of songs. A majority of their music is mellow, but they have an exuberance when they play that makes the show very upbeat and entertaining. They all seem to be having a great time on stage.

Despite the crowd having dwindled down after the last band performed, they were still energetic and fun. There was one guy constantly jumping around and dancing having a good time. Overall, I liked their set and would definately see them again.

  1. Went in to catch Socratic (I live in Hoboken, so it was rather convenient), and ended up pleasantly surprised by The Embracers. I will likely make the attempt to catch their next couple shows, I liked their stage act a lot.
