Song of the Day: “Black Sheep” by Metric

Today’s song is “Black Sheep” by Metric. This is the official music video of the track featured on the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Soundtrack. The video was shot when Metric performed “Black Sheep” in July 2010 at Comic-Con in San Diego after a surprise screening of Scott Pilgrim with the director and cast. The soundtrack is an audio manifestation of the exploits seen in the action-comedy directed by genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and starring Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad). Nigel Godrich, the celebrated producer who has worked on albums by Radiohead, Beck, Paul McCartney, Travis and many others, serves as executive producer on the soundtrack.

Metric Partners with Indaba Music to Crowdsource Fantasies Remix album

Critically-acclaimed indie rock darlings Metric have partnered with Indaba Music, Topspin and RCRDLBL.com to launch a remix program designed to source an entire album’s worth of remixes of the songs from their album Fantasies. The album, which earned the band MySpace’s coveted “Triumph of the Year” award, was shortlisted for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize for Album of the Year, and won the Alternative Album of the Year at the 2010 Juno Awards, will undergo a reinvention at the hands of IndabaMusic.com’s 500,000-member-strong global community of musicians. The band themselves will choose their favorite remix of each of the album’s 10 tracks and award each winning remixer with $1000.

Metric believes that directly engaging their fans, as well as Indaba Music‘s community, will provide them an ideal forum for sourcing remixes while at the same time deepening the connection with their supporters. The band’s decision to self-release Fantasies in 2009 in approximately 20 countries across 5 continents without the backing of a record label marked the beginning of a new chapter in their career and has given rise to an explosive growth in the band’s worldwide profile and popularity. Despite becoming the first band to achieve their first ever top 20 hit at US commercial radio without label support (a feat they repeated with their second single) and a slew of other impressive accolades, above all else Metric credits the tenacious support of their fans as being most responsible for taking the band to new heights.

Says Metric, “We’ve always believed that if we could just cut out all the extraneous middle men and interact as directly as possible with our fans that we would win. The more we engage with them, the better we do. The more we do it, the better it gets! With people in 205 countries and territories able to participate in remixing Fantasies, this will become the thing we’ve done with the furthest reach to date. We know how many talented musicians there are around the world that are just looking for a chance to be heard and this seemed like a good way to potentially offer some of them an opportunity to see that happen!  We’re super excited to see what’s going to come of it!”

Not only is the program forward-thinking for the band, the program also marks a first for Indaba Music, as Topspin Media’s direct-to-consumer sales technology will be incorporated into all Metric remix competition pages. A long standing Metric collaborator, Topspin’s involvement will enable fans and musicians to purchase advanced stem packs straight from each contest page for $1.99/song, providing musicians with dozens of isolated stems, and thus enhanced sonic flexibility. Additionally, as with all Indaba Music remix programs, the competition will also offer a free basic set of stems for each song.

Nate Lew Head of Marketing, Business Development at Indaba Music said, “More than a third of Indaba Music’s users spend over $1,000 annually on instruments, equipment and offline tools. Clearly they invest in their craft, and we’re thrilled to be working with Metric and Topspin to offer our global community of musicians, many of whom are active remixers, with a musician-specific version of the Fantasies record (via advanced stems), as well as an incredible career opportunity.”

Additional promotion for the program will be provided by RCRD LBL, the premiere online destination for the hottest daily music downloads. RCRD LBL will also maximize exposure for the selected remixes, by featuring them on their site, social media pages, and distribution partner sites.

Entrants should register at http://www.indabamusic.com/studio_access/metric. The top remixes will be announced in early 2011.

The Like: Music as Boring As The Name

I don’t want to hear about other people’s problems. Especially when I’m sitting back, relaxing with a beer, a book and my iPod. After about three songs on The Like’s new album, Release Me, lead singer Elizabeth Berg’s incessant lamenting over her past relationship blunders becomes over dramatic, annoying, and even laughable.

Throughout the album Berg portrays a multitude of emotions veiled in a nonchalant guise of passivity and candor that at first seems cute, even charming. Her warm, inviting voice almost makes you forget about the nonsense she’s blabbering about. But eventually, the thirteen cookie-cutter pop tracks become indiscernible, one blending right into the other, and Berg’s relentlessness catches up. By that point her candor seems more and more like schoolgirl complaints about boy problems and your iPod has switched to another artist. Who hurt you, Liz?

Anyway, maybe this just isn’t my taste in music, but maybe listening to this album is like listening to a collection of tracks I’ve already heard in a dozen places, just worse. Most of the time the album sounds like Metric, and at others Belle and Sebastian, sans the intricate musical intrigue. It’s not that it’s terribly offensive music; it just doesn’t have much to offer.

Listen to Release Me with fresh ears and really low expectations, and you may gain something from it. If you’re having guy problems, the can album will help. But probably not. Otherwise go listen to some Radiohead.

Metric Provide Theme Song for New Twilight Movie

Metric and Twilight fans alike have something to be very excited about – a brand-new track by Metric will be featured on the highly-anticipated soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, as the movie’s theme song. The song, titled “Eclipse (All Yours)”, was co-written by Metric lead singer Emily Haines and guitarist Jimmy Shaw with legendary film composer Howard Shore, who wrote the acclaimed score for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy among many others.

“I’ve always wanted to write music for a film, but I never expected to start with something on this scale,” said Emily Haines about the soundtrack. “I don’t have to tell you what an honor it was to be hand-picked by Howard to do this work. We are massively grateful for the opportunity.”

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released on June 8, 2010 via Chop Shop/Atlantic. The first single from the album will be Muse’s “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever)”. Metric’s “Eclipse (All Yours)” will be featured along with music from such major artists as Vampire Weekend, Muse, The Black Keys, Bat for Lashes, Florence and the Machine, Band of Horses and The Dead Weather. The soundtrack was supervised by Chop Shop’s Alexandra Patsavas (Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl) who worked closely with the film’s director David Slade. The soundtrack to the previous film, which included Thom Yorke, The Killers, OK Go, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Muse, sold almost 4 million copies worldwide. The soundtrack topped the Billboard top 200 chart upon release.

Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse opens on June 30, 2010. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Bryce Dallas Howard, Billy Burke and Dakota Fanning and is directed by David Slade. In Eclipse, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob – knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the struggle between vampire and werewolf.
