Song of the Day

Song of the Day: “Magic” by The Knocks

Today’s song is “Magic” by The Knocks. This is the title track off the duo’s most recent Magic EP
The Knocks, made up of Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “Jpatt” Patterson, got their name from the early days of their production career when they tirelessly worked out of their home studios and complaining neighbors would knock on their doors. Since that time they have gone on to produce original material and remixes for artists like Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Foster The People to name a few. They’ve shared the stage with acts like Deadmau5, Chromeo, Calvin Harris and just finished a U.S. tour with Ellie Goulding.

Now the duo is stepping out into the spotlight with their own music. It’s effortless, electro-cool melodies with a groovalicous hook and chorus. Listen below and for more information on The Knocks check out their official website, MySpace, Facebook , and Twitter pages.

Today’s song is “Trilby” by Mike Acerbo. This is the first single off his upcoming album The Search, due out February 14th. This new album features a unique combination of sounds. “Trilby” is about the dark sadness beneath the surface of Trilby, a waitress Acerbo worked with during his restaurant years. The NY folk rocker has a sound that is eloquently beautiful. His intricate arrangements of various musical instruments-cellos, fiddles, piano, recorders, brass and guitars –takes the listener on a journey of a dark and out of this world fairy tale that is mysteriously striking, and powerful. With comparisons to Florence & The Machine, Sufjan Stevens, The Avett Brothers, and Guster, Acerbo is an artist to listen to.

Song of the Day: “Burn A Miracle” by Say Anything

Today’s song is “Burn A Miracle” by Say Anything. This is the first single off the band’s upcoming fourth studio album, Anarchy, My Dear on Equal Vision Records. Produced by Tim O’Heir (Say Anything, Sebadoh, Superdrag) the record will be released on on March 13th, 2012.

Say Anything have been making odd, unclassifiable indie rock music since they were 14 or 15 years old. Characterized as by what one might imagine if Larry David fronted a Fugazi cover band with the members of Queen. Not that that’s a stretch or anything. They have a lovable, strange, literate and loud rock that I just can’t get enough of.

Anarchy, My Dear is in its purest sense, a form of propaganda-an intense expression of frontman Max Bemis’ love for the idea of anarchy. Says Bemis, “Anarchy, My Dear is our first attempt to write a true ‘punk’ record; thematically speaking, it’s a collection of songs about subverting society and destroying the boundaries humankind has placed upon ourselves both physically and in our minds. Coincidentally, it also happens to be the first record we’ve made in years where we had total freedom to explore our ‘edgier’ side and present a raw picture of what the band is truly about onstage.”

The band is planning to take it to the road this year in support of the new album (see dates below). The 31-date tour will kick off on March 24th at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom, and will then make its way around the country, culminating with a performance at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on May 3rd. Say Anything have an engaging and powerful live show that should not be missed

Song of the “Hey Maria” by Deer Park Avenue

Today’s song is “Hey Maria” by Deer Park Avenue. The Sacremento, Cali rock duo consists of sisters Sarah (guitar and vocals) and Stephanie Snyder (drums and backing vocals). The girls have been jamming together since the were kids, but it wasn’t until about two years ago that they started the band. Since forming, they have toured throughout the US and Europe and have had their music featured on

This single is off their latest release entitled Stop & Go which was produced by Matt Bissonette (Brian Wilson, Rick Springfield, Ringo Starr). The girls have a retro rock/pop sound that has been described as “Girl Weezer” or “Paramore covering the Beach Boys.” They have been compared to Green Day, Metric, and Jimmy Eat World. Their sound is an eclectic, alternative rock that reminds me of the greatness of the early nineties. It is simplistic, high energy, and melodic. This duo has an older influence with a great new rock edge that makes for some awesome music.

Song of the Day: “Hip to Deaf” by Asleep

Today’s song is “Hip to Deaf” by Asleep. The Youngstown, Ohio indie four-piece, consist of Todd Kaden (vocals/guitar), Jon Dean (guitar), Cory Snyder (bass/vocals), and Shawn Logan (drums/percussion). Asleep is a rock band with an experimental focus. They write pop songs that reflect a rusty optimism prevalent throughout their northeast Ohio surroundings. Their two previous releases, All These Things We’ll Never Need recorded by Bill Korecky (Mushroomhead) and Between, Above, and Below produced by Mike Watts (As Tall As Lions, The Dear Hunter), received great reviews selling over 10,000 physical copies.

Asleep will be releasing their latest album Unpleasant Companion on February 7th. The album was recorded in four days to capture a live dynamic onto 16-track 2-inch analog tape with legendary Chicago engineer, Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Page and Plant, Iggy Pop and the Stooges). “The album’s central theme explores how we manage to stay so addictively connected yet simplistically separated from one another through the same digital loops in the current fabric of the information age” states Asleep.
