Rocking Under The Radar: The Colourist

The Colourist

Southern California band The Colourist is composed of Justin Wagner (keys vocals), Kollin Johannsen (bass/guitar), Adam Castilla (guitar/vocals), and Maya Tuttle (drums /vocals). The Orange county quartet describes themselves as majestic, jungle rock. Listening to them you can’t help but get swept away by the exuberance of lofty pop melodies with catchy choruses and a splendid laid back vibe that is the perfect soundtrack for your summer vacation.

Earlier this year the band was nominated for three OCMAs: “Best New Artist,” “Best Song (Oh Goodbye),” and “Best Live Band.” The band also released their self-titled EP featuring the nominated song “Oh Goodbye.”

Contributor Suzanne caught up with The Colourist at SXSW where they talked about how they came together, where they get their ideas for their videos, and what they plan to do for the summer:

Rocking Under The Radar: A Million Years

A Million Years is a band that stimulates your senses and rocks your soul. I first saw the Brooklyn based quartet play a stint at the Studio at Webster Hall in NYC in early 2010 when they opened for TV/TV.  I was taken over by their body-shaking, guitar- heavy, indie-rock grooves.

Forming in 2007, A Million Years was born out of jam sessions with various band members in Keith Madden’s (guitar/vocals) bedroom. Eventually the quartet fell into place with Andrew Samaha (bass/vocals), Andrew Vanette (drums/vocals) and Nick Werber (guitar/vocals) as its permanent members. The band has toured extensively throughout the east coast, as well as in venues all around New York City including Bowery Ballroom, Highline Ballroom, Bowery Electric, The Studio @ Webster Hall, and The Mercury Lounge. A Million Years released their first EP Incandescent in 2009 The EP was produced by Shannon Ferguson of the band Longwave who Madden met as a touring guitarist for the band. Their debut album Mischief Maker, also produced by Ferguson, is being released tomorrow, June 1st. The band has been receiving airplay on NYC’s WRXP and are preparing for a national tour to support this month’s album release.

A Million Years is a force to be reckoned with. They have crafted a powerful and exciting sound that incorporates elements of rock, funk, and punk. Their debut album Mischief Maker is an intriguing and intense work of art featuring ethereal, heavy guitars, as well as pop melodies that rock hard. Once you finish listening to the album you will want to play it all over again.

Stand out tracks: “By Yourself,” “Poster Girl,” and “California Smile”

The band will be playing The Studio at Webster Hall for their CD release party, June 18th. If you’re in the NYC area I highly recommend you go to the show as they have an amazing live performance. For more information on the band check them out on MySpace and Facebook and get the album on iTunes when it drops tomorrow!

Rocking Under The Radar: Ahimsa Sunrise

While I’m not one for listening to a lot of Metal/Screamo, there was something about Ahimsa Sunrise that grabbed my attention. Composed of Brian Caine (bass), Seth Cooper (vocals/guitar), Jarrod Currin (guitar), and Patrick Gallagher (drums), the Pennsylvania quartet possesses an atypical and electrifyingly striking sound that reaches beyond the parameters of the genre.

Since forming in 2004, Ahimsa Sunrise has many accomplishments under their belt. The band has played extensively taking part in major tours like the Vans Warped Tour 2005, Taste of Chaos Tour 2008, and shared the stage with a multitude of national acts such as Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, Circa Survive, Bullets for My Valentine, Bless the Fall, Receiving End of Sirens, Darkest Hour, Emmure, God Forbid, Unwritten Law, and Amber Pacific. In 2007, they appeared on FUSE TV for winning the Bodog Battle of the Bands in Washington, D.C. Out of 7,000 unsigned bands in the US, they were 1 of the 17 chosen to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the battle. The band was also awarded honors being named on of the Top 20 Unsigned Metal Bands on MySpace, one of the Top 10 Unsigned Bands on MySpace, and one of the Top 100 Unsigned Bands on PureVolume. Ahimsa Sunrise has released two EPs and an album: The Viceroy and the Monarch in 2005, The Unseen Realm EP in 2008, and most recently Save It which was released this past March.

Sometimes referred to as a mix of Coheed and Cambria and Saosin, Ahimsa Sunrise’s music is a fusion of somber melodies and grinding metal guitars juxtaposed against the beautiful lyricism so eloquently sang and screamed by Seth Cooper. Their latest single “Save It” creates a smooth and beautiful balance of light and dark with its highs and lows of raging, speedy metal. Cooper has a kicking vocal range with the ability to switch from a scream on a dime, making you think there are two singers.

We caught up with the band earlier this year at SXSW where we chatted about the meaning behind their band name, Cooper’s amazing vocal range, their “Save It“ video, and the experience on FUSE’s battle of the bands. Watch below and for more information on the band check out MySpace. Their EP Save It is available on Ahimsa Sunrise now!

Rocking Under The Radar: The Best Week Ever

James, Tom, Lacey
While there are a lot of pop rock groups out there, there is something about Poughkeepsie band, The Best Week Ever that makes them stand out from the crowd. Composed of Lacey Steinel (vocals), Tom DeGrazia (vocals/guitar/programming), James Rousseau (piano/programming), and Dan Clap (bass)the quartet has a sound that is charmingly irresistible.

While the quartet is fairly new to the scene, their talent is quickly being noticed. Recently, the band was named a winner of the Our Stage Bon Jovi Superband contest and are scheduled to open for the Platinum selling group May 27th at the new Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.

I was introduced to this band by a friend who had come across them on the contest web page. Fueled by infectious hooks and choruses, their music is an energetic burst of excitement. Poppin’ piano and synth melodies paired with the dueting vocals of Steinel and DeGrazi creates supercharged love pop that you will be singing along to in no time.

The band is currently writing their debut EP and gearing up for their upcoming summer tour. Get their single’s “Suitcases” and “I’m Not One For Complaining, But..” on now. For tour dates, music, and more check out www.thebestweekever.com

Rocking Under the Radar: Lucero

Band: Lucero

Where Are They From? Memphis, Tennessee

When Did They Start? 1998

Who Are They? Over the last 12 years, Lucero’s sound has moved from straight-ahead punk towards some amalgam of alt-country, southern rock, and punk. In that time, the band has released seven albums under a few different labels, and has toured extensively in North America.

Why Should You Care? Because Lucero is likely the best band in the genre that some have labeled “cowpunk.” Their songs are surprisingly tight considering the amount of instrumentation in them (especially on recent records), and their sound is relatively unique.

What Do They Have to Say?

  • “Beer tastes like blood/My mouth is numb/and i cant make the words I need to say/She had a weakness for writers/and I, I was never that good at words anyways.” – Lyric from “Nights Like These”
  • “So what if all my heroes are the losing kind?” – Lyric from “What Are You Willing To Lose?”
  • How Do They Sound?

  • “My Best Girl”
  • “Smoke”
  • Rocking Under The Radar: Lunic

Lunic is the brainchild of violist/songwriter Kaitee Page. A native of Albany, NY, Page is a classically trained violist and self-taught pianist as well as a little bass and guitar. Inspired by a performance of the English alt/rock band Muse at Coachella in 2005, Page started her own band in 2008 in London, UK.

June 2008 Lunic released an EP called Splinter independently in the US & the UK. A collection of 10 unfinished demo songs from 2006/2007  entitled Skeletons was released digitally October 2008. Lunic’s highly-anticipated debut album, Lovethief, was released worldwide May 14th, 2009. The album, having been funded completely by Lunic fans worldwide via the crowd-sourcing website, Sellaband.com, gained Lunic national recognition and was interviewed by renown media outlets such as ABC’s Good Morning America and The New York Times.

Since the time of her ground breaking release, Lunic has received airplay on 100+ radio stations across America and Canada. In 2009, Lunic opened for Creed at SPAC and headlined LarkFest with Moby in Albany, NY. Lunic was chosen by Channel 103.1 as a Top 6 Finalist in the station’s Most Original Band Contest and the first single from Lovethief, “Him” was nominated for Rock Single of the Year by the LA Music Awards. “Him” was also chosen as a Top 3 Finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Competition Rock Category, the GINA For Missing Persons Songwriter Contest and Mike Pinder’s (Moody Blues) Songwars Songwriting Competition.

Her music is a breadth of emotion. Lovethief is 11 tracks of love, hate, and everything in between. The incorporation of the viola creates a hauntingly beautiful and brilliant coagulation of rock and classical melodies. From start to finish you will be spellbound with Lunic’s rich, imaginative, and ornate music. There is not one song on this album that you will now like.

If you’re a fan of  Metric, Paramore, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you’re sure to love Lunic. For more information on the band check out MySpace and get Lovethief now on Lunic!

    Rocking Under the Radar: Wolfmother

    Band: Wolfmother

Where Are They From? Sydney, Australia

    When Did They Start? 2000

Who Are They? Wolfmother is a band on the cusp of mainstream stardom. They’ve recorded two critically-acclaimed albums of riff-filled hard rock with a bit of a psychedelic twist thrown in, and have launched several successful international tours.

Why Should You Care? Because there are few bands that sound quite like Wolfmother. The band crafts songs off of amazingly robust guitar riffs, topping them off with Andrew Stockdale’s high-pitched vocals belting out trippy lyrics. Their melding of 70s-rock bombast with contemporary grit is often breathtaking, and most of all, extremely punchy with a side of plain old fun.

What Do They Have to Say?

  • “Sister can you tell me when the day turns to night/She left without a word and wondered inside/How many day’s must I still wonder why/And see her face in every passer by” – Lyric from “White Unicorn”
  • “Slipped off into the slip stream/She’s looking for the summer dream/Came down from the mountain/To find another machine ” – Lyric from “California Queen”
  • How Do They Sound?

  • “Woman”
  • “New Moon Rising”

    Rocking Under The Radar: Sleeperstar

This week’s unsigned artist is Sleeperstar. Hailing from Dallas, Texas the five piece band describes themselves as a “U2 meets Third Eye Blind” and is composed of Chris Pearson (vocals, guitar, piano), Nick Box (vocals, lead guitar, piano), Jake Lester (vocals, piano, synth, keyboards), Brandon Roses (bass), and Shaun Menary (drums).

In 2007 the band released an EP entitled, To Speak, To Love, To Listen. With their they dedicated tour ethic playing both colleges and club shows all around the United States, they have garnered a large following. The band will release their first full length album Just Another Ghost worldwide June 22.

This quintet combines buoyant rock with a sweet burst of piano melodies creating beautiful, emotionally charged music. I first saw this band back in March at SXSW. We happened to be at the Thirsty Nickel and they were the next band on the lineup to play. The performance was great; they exuded high-energy and I was very impressed by the vocals of Pearson. With their raw talent and great music it’s no wonder they have such a big fanbase.

Stands out tracks: “Disengage,” “Texas Rain,” “Just So You Know”

You can get their new album, To Speak, To Love, To Listen now on Sleeperstar and check out the band currently on tour. They are playing the Canal Room in NYC May 4. For more tour dates and information on the band click HERE!

Rocking Under the Radar: J Roddy Walston and The Business

Band: J Roddy Walston and The Business

Where Are They From? Baltimore, Maryland

    When Did They Start? 2007

Who Are They? J Roddy Walston and The Business is a straight-ahead rock band from Baltimore with one LP (Hail Mega Boys) under their belt. They recently signed with Vagrant Records, and have toured with fellow Vagrant acts Murder By Death and The Hold Steady.

Why Should You Care? Because despite their comically long name, J Roddy Walston and The Business is a wonderfully raw rock band. Their songs are alternatively guitar or piano driven, and the band plays them like their lives depend on it, creating an energy is infectious.

What Do They Have to Say?

  • “C’mon let’s make a scene/Make it loud and keep it mean/These everydays are breaking you/You say there’s nothing you can do” – Lyric from “Rock and Roll The Second”
  • “And it only feels like marriage/When we’re havin’ sex/So I hit it like I want/’Cause she just does it for the checks” – Lyric from “Go Malachi”
  • How Do They Sound?

  • “I Don’t Wanna Hear It”

Rocking Under the Radar: 500 Miles To Memphis

    500 Miles to Memphis
Named for the distance from their hometown of Cincinnati to Graceland, 500 Miles to Memphis has created a charismatic brand of punk rock with an emphasis on the twang of Bluegrass and Country. Composed of Ryan Malott (vocals, guitar), Noah Sugarman (guitar, vocals), Jeff Snyder (bass), Kevin Hogle (drums), David Rhodes Brown (lap steel), Elaina Brown (keyboard, vocals), this cowpunk sextet  is sure to appeal to the masses.

This past February, the band released their third album We’ve Built Up to Nothing. The release was produced by platinum award-winning producer, Erwin Musper (Scorpions, Van Halen, Def Leppard, David Bowie, Mick Jagger) is a departure from their previous release Sunshine in a Shot Glass. While both albums were produced by Musper, the band said they took a different approach with the music composition and writing process which made for a whole new sound. “We experimented with different time signatures and rhythms. There are a lot more vocal harmonies, which is always fun. The guitars are huge too. Aside from that we used a lot of different instruments. We basically went back to our high school concert band roots and brought out a whole orchestra. Our keyboard player, Elaina, is a band director at a school here in Cincinnati, OH. Kevin, the drummer, has a bachelors in music education from Morehead State University where performed with the nationally recognized marching percussion ensemble. He toured the world over at a very young age. I played first chair trombone all throughout high school. It was a lot of fun composing all of the auxiliary instruments. The songwriting on this album is also different. I went at it in a different frame of mind. I pretty much wrote what I wanted to say and hear. Basically I wrote with reckless abandon without worrying whether or not these songs would be on a top forty list. Ironically they ended up turning out very accessible and more catchy than the last.”

500 Miles to Memphis has been featured on MTV’s Nitro Circus and American Movie Classics (AMC) and countless YouTube “extreme sports” videos by athletes such as Travis Pastrana. Their song “All My Friends Are Crazy” is now part of the Rock Band video game.

We’ve Built Up To Nothing features high tempo and stripped down punk riffs with a dash of honky tonk country and blues to create an truly eclectic sound. The album opens with fast paced punk flavored country of  “It’s Alright” and “Let It Go.” Things get kicked up a notch with the country fiddle on songs like  “Six Foot Hole” and “Barfly.” Malott delivers lyrics in an upbeat manner getting you excited for songs about lover’s lament and drowning your sorrows in whiskey and bourbon. The fusion of punk and country makes for music that is a good time.

Stand out tracks: “Let It Go,” “It’s Alright,” “Shots,” and “Lead Me On”

For more information on the band check out MySpace and see them perform live this Wednesday, April 21st, at The National Underground in NYC. Get We’ve Built Up To Nothing
