The Aggrolites at Hawthorne Theatre

20120310-102231.jpg
This past weekend I went out to visit a friend in Portland, OR. Being known for a great music scene I was excited for my first show. The Aggrolites were in town and are playing the Hawthorne Theatre.

The California quintet comprised of Alex McKenzie (drums), Roger Rivas (piano, organ), Jesse Wagner (vocals, lead guitar), and Jeff Roffredo (bass) came out to the protest song “We Shall Overcome” all dressed in black button up shirts with smiles on their faces ready play the stoked crowd. Scanning the room you could see their fan base ranged from adults to young kids in high school. It was an interesting mix of people but everyone harmonized and created a beautiful energy that was feeding off the sweet dirty reggae coming from the stage.

The Aggrolites opened with the “Funky Fire” which was a blazing song featuring husky soul vocals and some danceable keys that got the crowd moving and grooving. Watching the band I was entranced by their powerful fusion of soul and reggae.

Throughout the show I was constantly moving from watching the band to the crowd as they danced and swayed to the sweet rhythms and moved in unison creating their playfully circle pits and moshing gently into each other. It was almost as if it was in slow motion. The two were intertwined and became one with each feeding energy off the other. It was a great interaction with hands clapping and hips swaying. The Aggrolites reminded me a bit of a mix between the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Southside Johnny.

In true concert fashion, they appeased the crowd to come back and play a lengthy encore they were screaming for. They closed with the reggae cover “Don’t Let Me Down.” They sure did not let me down; seeing The Aggrolites was a feel good, great time. If you’re looking for some good dance music that is part bluesy, part reggae this is a band to check out.

ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror 2012 Annouces Line Up and Opens Pre-Sale

All Tomorrow’s Parties presents I’ll Be Your Mirror USA 2012 Curated by Greg Dulli (The Afghan Whigs) & ATP

Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd September – Asbury Park, N.J.

“The wall between fans and fame is mostly stripped away, as is corporate sponsorship. In terms of vibe, it is simply the best music festival there is.” – NPR

THE AFGHAN WHIGS, LOUIS C.K., THE ROOTS, JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ, MARK LANEGAN BAND, DIRTY THREE, SHARON VAN ETTEN, HOT SNAKES, THE MAKE-UP & Many More Confirmed!

Pre-sale is available now – click here and use code AfghanWhigs2012 to buy.

ATP are very pleased to confirm our return to Asbury Park, New Jersey USA with a new I’ll Be Your Mirror event, the Saturday night of which will be headlined by The Afghan Whigs (who have reunited after a 13 year hiatus) and curated by their frontman Greg Dulli. Formed in 1986, the bands career from then until 2001 saw them release six acclaimed albums during their career. Fusing classic rock with grunge-era distortion and a heavy soul influence, The Afghan Whigs were one of the most renowned live bands of their time and ATP is excited to be a part of this long awaited reformation.

We are also very excited to present Grammy Award winner LOUIS C.K.

(handpicked by Greg Dulli) who will be making a rare festival appearance, the fantastic THE ROOTS, JOSÉ GONZÁLEZ, a show from the reformed THE MAKE-UP and many others, see below for full line-up confirmed so far.

After previous years in upstate New York, ATP moved to the iconic Asbury Park waterfront in 2011 for a hugely successful I’ll Be Your Mirror event co-curated & headlined by Portishead, and we are very happy to return to this very special location in September. The Convention Hall has seen the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Rolling Stones grace its stage and the Paramount Theatre has welcomed stars such as Tony Bennett who often insists on playing a song with all the electrics turned off to demonstrate the amazing acoustics of the room. Once again the ATP experience will be taking over the boardwalk, with the main shows taking place at the Convention Hall and Paramount Theatre, and other events happening at the Berkeley hotel (former home of Johnny Cash).

As well as the live music line-up of 35+ acts across the weekend, Friday will feature a Comedy stage, and we’re very pleased to announce that our friends at The Criterion Collection will return to run the Cinema across the weekend. All three days feature DJs and other activities to be confirmed in the months ahead. Performances take place indoors with great soundsystems, so you have no need to worry about the weather, and Asbury Park is easily accessible via public transport from nearby cities (see below for details).

Today we can start to confirm our fantastic line-up…

Young The Giant’s “Cough Syrup” To Be Featured On GLEE

Looks like Young the Giant has officially hit mainstream their  hit single “Cough Syrup” will be featured in the opening scene of the winter finale of GLEE episode 314 entitled “On My Way” February 21, 2012 – 8:00pm-9:00pm EST/PST on FOX.

We are big Young the Giant fans and originally featured them as one of our Rocking Under the Radar artists back in November of 2010.

Young The Giant has garnered massive critical acclaim for their album and their energetic live performances at festivals and shows all around the world.  They just kicked off their sold out 2012 headline tour in San Francisco on February 9, 2012.  The Orange County Register who reviewed the first of two sold-out nights at the Wiltern in Los Angeles said the band gave “…a totally mesmerizing performance.”

Young The Giant was the only rock band to perform at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, and have performed on MTV Unplugged, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! among others.  Their first single, “My Body,” peaked at #4 on the alternative chart while their second single, “Cough Syrup,” reached #2 on the alternative chart; “Apartment,” Young The Giant’s third single is continuing along the same path as it climbs up the charts.  Hear them perform these songs and more as their headline tour continues to move across North America through mid-April; catch them at Bonnaroo in June and at Central Park Summerstage on July 16, 2012.

River City Extension’s New Album – Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger To Be Released in June

River City Extension announced earlier this week that their second album Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger will be released on June 5th, 201 via XOXO Records / Anchor & Hope Music.

The eight-member Toms River, New Jersey, band recorded the 14-track album with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Josh Ritter, Secret Machines, Gomez) at Engine Studios in Chicago.

Eat Sleep Breathe Music had the opportunity to hear some of the new songs  last Friday at The Press Room in Asbury Park, where Joe Michelini performed a solo acoustic set followed by a listening party for the new album.  The Front Bottoms kicked the night off for Michelini performing tracks off their self-titled debut full-length album.
