Artist of the Month: Roman Holiday

Seattle is known for producing some great music and Roman Holiday is no exception. Made up of Nick Howard (bass), Shane Lance (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Daniel Collins (lead guitar), and Emerson Shotwell (drums, percussion) this alternative rock quartet will capture your attention at first listen.

The band recently released their single “Fuel The Fire” on iTunes. The song will also be on their upcoming LP Move Your Heart, Shake Your Bones.

The band has been creating buzz in their hometown and abroad, regularly drawing hundreds of fans each night, who passionately sing along with frontman Shane Lance.

Roman Holiday additionally found acclaim overseas when on tour in the U.K. they caught the ear of music industry veterans Dennis Sinnott & Adam Mills, both long-time entrepreneur’s of records, publishing and artist management. Sinnot and Mills quickly coordinated a round of showcases in the U.K, with several major labels and publishing companies in attendance.

Roman Holiday is a trip that you can’t get enough. The heart pounding melodies and group chorus’ have a rock hard, but are light and melodic enough to please anyone. Before you know it you will be singing along to the infectious lyrics.

ESBMusic had the chance to catch up with the band and discuss their background, what to expect from their new LP, and their plans for the rest of the year.

ESBM:: How did you come up with your band name?
RH: Well, first off, we love the classic movie ‘Roman Holiday’ with Audrey Hepburn. But. Truthfully. We were brainstorming band name ideas and really hadn’t come up with anything that we felt like fit us. Somehow in the process we got on the topic of Rome. So really late one night we get a text from our producer, Mark, saying “How about ‘Roman Holiday’?!”. It’s the title of a great classic movie with the beautiful Audrey Hepburn. After we all talked about it we felt like it was a name that we could run with. We’ve been Roman Holiday ever since then.

ESBM::How did the band form and start?
RH: We’ve all played music since we were young. About 3 years ago the four of us had been playing off and on together in a different local band, but not really pursuing anything seriously. Shane started to work at a recording studio in the area and began talking with the studio owner, Mark Simmons, about starting a Rock project to pour studio resources into. Shane brought up that he’d been playing music with some guys, then brought us in to play a few songs for Mark. Mark really saw potential in us. At that point we began writing, rehearsing, and recording at the studio along with Marks input. That’s essentially when we became Roman Holiday.

ESBM:: A lot of people have compared your sound to Kings of Leon. How do you feel about that?
RH: Nice! Interesting question. As with any band, people like to make comparisons. There are a handful of bands we get compared to fairly consitently, I guess every once in awhile we hear ‘Kings of Leon’. We don’t mind. They’re a good band who play real music, so it doesn’t bother us when people hear our songs and draw comparisons.

ESBM:: “Fuel The Fire” is your first single off your latest album. How was that song chosen?
RH: “Fuel The Fire” was one of the last songs to be written for our upcoming record “MOVE YOUR HEART//SHAKE YOUR BONES”. As we were writing it, we fell in love with the groove and feel of the song, and felt like people would too. It’s an easy song to ‘get’. You hear it once and you know it. And it’s easy to relate to. That’s what we feel makes a good single. When it came time to choose the first single, that song was the obvious choice.

ESBM::What can we expect of your upcoming LP?
RH: Great songs. We truly feel that way. As artists, not often do you get to the end of a creative venture and look back and feel like you laid it down just right. We feel that way about our new record. From the song writing, to the tones on the record, all the way to the way it sounds and feels coming out of a stereo, we feel great about this one. We can’t wait to get it out to you all. Literally.

ESBM:: You have possible upcoming tour plans. What places are you most excited to play?
RH: Right now we’re internally working on some tour plans, we’ll keep you all posted. We will most definitely be out again soon though! We just returned from Europe and that was a fantasic experience. I think we all have different places that we’re excited to play. But collectively, we cannot wait to tour the entire world.

ESBM:: What is your dream tour? Who do you want to play with?
RH: Our dream tour would be an extesive world arena tour. Who with? Opening for The Beatles, The Stones, Johnny Cash, M. Ward, and Justin Beiber. All true, except for Justin Beiber.

ESBM:: Seattle is a historic place for music. How did this influence your sound?
RH: Growing up here has really given us a great appreciation for good music, and well written songs. So many great artists have been born out of Seattle, and so many great artists have thrived here. It’s a city where music is loved, so it’s an easy place to be comfortable as a musician. We’ve learned to truly appreciate the heritage of the Seattle sound, while also being able to find our own, unique sound.

ESBM:: What’s the local music scene like in Seattle?
RH: It’s very diverse. The singer song-writer/folk scene is really thriving right now. A lot of great music coming out of it. But one best things about Seattle is that the city just has a true appreciation for ‘good music’, whatever the style.

ESBM:: There is an acoustic video of you guys on YouTube. Do you prefer acoustic?
RH: No. But we do very much enjoy it. It’s a fun change up. Our favorite part about doing acoustic sets is allowing people to really connect with the songs in a new way; to connect with the raw, pure, stripped down version of the song.

ESBM:: Who are you listening to right now?
RH: We all have varying taste in music, but some of the records we’re listening to at the moment are:
El Camino by The Black Keys, the new Bon Iver record, Curse Your Branches by David Bazan,Economy by John Mark McMillan, all albums by The Strokes, M. Ward, andRubber Soul by The Beatles.

ESBM:: What are your plans for the rest of the year?
RH: To release our new record “MOVE YOUR HEART//SHAKE YOUR BONES”, to tour as much as possible, and to do whatever it takes to make the whole world fall in love with Roman Holiday.

Song of the Day: “Sleeptalk” by PaperTwin

Today’s song is “Sleeptalk” by Papertwin. Papertwin began as an experimental recording project started by the mind of artist and songwriter Max Decker (vocals, gtr., synths), and was soon joined by friend Francis Cardinale (drums, programming). Decker had been painting and drawing since childhood and the musical collaboration started off as a casual exchange between friends. After some time apart, both living in Brooklyn, they reunited and experimented with electronic music and melodic structures that became the foundation of Papertwin, still, there was a need for real time instruments and immediate sound. Meeting each other as students at a New York audio engineering school, Francis met piano technician Nick Shopa who eagerly brought his musical sensibilities to the band through playing synthesizers. Completing the four-piece circle, music producer and former Berklee College of Music student Justin Miller came and provided the bass the band needed. This song is off the band’s album Porcelain.

New Music Venue Opening in Kennilworth, NJ

Kennilworth, NJ will have a new spot for seeing shows. 10th Street Live music venue/bar & grill. Read below about the spot by Steven Buckley

With a few weeks still left before the official opening, 10th Street Live music venue/bar & grill in Kenilworth, NJ is already being talked about as the “venue to save the scene”. The long anticipated venue will feature live music multiple days of the week and offer food and drink all 7 days.
With close affiliation to the popular Soundwaves Studios in Union, NJ, 10th Street Live will be the premier venue for up and coming local artists as well as national touring acts. “We strive to make this place the setting for the next chapter in the revitalization of the New Jersey music scene,” says Thomas Stratton, co-owner. Stratton is a long time native of the local music scene having played with NJ band Socratic for over a decade and in recent years building a reputation as head producer/engineer at Soundwaves Studios.
Stratton, alongside partners and co-owners Bob Vetter, Steven Blau, and Kevin Bryan, chose the location at 104 North 10th Street, former site of Apples, and began planning out the design over a year ago. Vetter has been in the construction business for over 20 years at V&J Construction, Inc. also in Kenilworth and was in charge of overseeing the entire project.
“Having known the way things are run at Soundwaves and the dedication behind every aspect of their business, I knew when they bought this place it’d be huge,” claims local musician Taylor Mandel, who plays for both The Ugly Club and Chocolate Bread.
“This is exactly what artists and bands need and have been looking for. I can’t wait to play there,” says Joe Capone of local rock band Streets of Fire.
It is well known in Union County that these guys are an intricate part of the music scene and 10th Street Live will be just one more example of it.

The Portland Music Foundation CMJ Showcase on Oct. 20th at Sullivan Hall!

Over the past few months, The Portland Music Foundation has been carefully reviewing submissions for their 2011 CMJ contest which will provide a showcase spot, transportation and accommodations, a consultation with a national public relations agency, as well as a daily stipend. The Portland Music Foundation has announced the seven contest winners who will be performing at their official CMJ Showcase on October 20th at Sullivan Hall in New York City at 7pm. Event is sponsored by The State Theatre and Husson College. Local Portland, Maine artists include:

Spose – 1 AM
Bio: This 26-year-old producer and emcee was named Maine’s “Best Hip Hop Act” for both 2008 and 2009 at the WePushButtons Awards. In 2010, he was named “Best Hip Hop Act”in the Portland Phoenix’s Best Music Poll. After his self-produced track “I’m Awesome” off his mixtape (with fellow emcee Cam Groves) received regional radio play, he landed his first major label contract with Universal Republic Records. The national release of his single went gold after selling over 500,000 digital copies in just a few months. Branching off the success of his single, Spose started his own company, The Preposterously Dank Entertainment Label. Spose’s video for his single “Pop Song” is set to release in October 2011 as a P. Dank Entertainment/Sony-ATV Publishing project, announcing his departure from Universal Republic Records. Spose plans to release two new albums within the next six months with national distribution provided by Sony Red Music Distribution, in addition to acting as producer for artists signed to his own company.

Sunset Hearts – 12 AM
Bio: Currently an eight-piece outfit, this unique electro pop band has quickly gathered a fan following to rival the most-established acts on the local scene. Known for their screaming synths, throbbing percussion, insistent vocals, gentle harmonies and a few megatons of guitar firepower, Sunset Hearts are set to release their awaited debut album on October 1st at SPACE Gallery. The band, known for their attention-grabbing live performance, have had headlining slots at the Belfast Free-Range Music Festival and PICNIC in Portland.

Billy Libby – 11 PM
Bio: He combines elements of indie, folk, and pop to craft ethereal yet captivating music. Hailing from Portland, ME he recently relocated to Brooklyn, NY. Billy took the long 2010 winter to record a collection of new material for his first official album Pitter Patter, which has an official release date of September 20th, 2011 in conjunction with Intrigue Music < http://intriguemusic.com>. With Pitter Patter, Billy presents a record that is subdued, yet deliberate with instrumentation ranging from lap-steel, to ukulele, strings and circuit-bent keyboards. Pitter Patter is an introspective collage of snapshots, which capture both the heaviest and most whimsical moments of life. It is a culmination of years of songwriting and experimenting with multiple instruments and recording techniques. Billy also started a program called Your Song, Your Story, a music therapy and education program in which he travels the country doing songwriting workshops assisting kids who have had traumatic experiences to create a song. Billy then creates a professional recording of each song.

Kurt Baker – 10 PM
Bio: Baker is a founding member of the notable pop/punk outfit the Leftovers, who formed in 2002 and have released many acclaimed records and have toured all over North America and Europe. As a solo singer/songwriter, Baker’s signature unique blend of ultra catchy Beach Boys/Beatles styled melodies under a relentless wall of high energy guitars and pounding rhythms have earned him the praise of Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout Records), Ben Weasel (Screeching Weasel) and Jaret Reddick (Bowling For Soup).

The Milkman’s Union – 9 PM
Bio: An enigmatic three-piece, while their sound can most easily be characterized as indie-rock, idiosyncrasies abound. Drawing from classical, jazz, electronic, and non-western music, the band infuses rock grooves with deft melodic hooks and rhythmic flourishes that combine for a unique sound. Over the past two years, their sound has been broad enough to share the stage with diverse acts such as Deerhunter, The Morning Benders, Wintersleep, Ben Kweller, Woods, S. Carey, White Hinterland, Ducktails and Kate Voegele. They’ve grown popular in the New England college circuit and have played at Dartmouth, Wesleyan, Trinity, UVM, Middlebury, Wellesley, Mt. Holyoke, UMaine, Bowdoin, Bates, Clark, Colby, and Tufts in the past year alone. They were recently named the Deli Magazine’s New England artist of month for March. Their latest full-length. Roads In is currently in rotation at more than 100 independent radio stations across the U.S. and Canada. They have a 7″ single featuring guest vocals from fellow Mainer Lady Lamb the Beekeeper due in September on Eternal Otter Records and an new EP due in November.

The Mallet Brothers Band – 8 PM
Bio: A fuel-injected 6-piece alt-country rock band with accolades from The 2011 Phoenix Best Music Poll (Best Local Act, Best Live Act, Best Local Album) and Top Selling New Local Artist in 2010′s poll. They’ve played the Nateva Festival with world-renowned band The Flaming Lips. Think Steve Earle meets the Stones, in a shack in the woods, with electricity and a bottle of bourbon. On September 18th, The Mallett Brothers Band won Maine’s Rockin’ Country Showdown, taking home a grand prize of $25,000.

The Toughcats – 7 PM
Bio: Energetic. Catchy. Fun. Exciting. Danceable. Memorable. Loveable. Beautiful. Amazing. Toughcat shows are as exhausting for the audience as they are for the beat-red drummer and the blister-fingered string players. With their unusual sound, a blend of old timey bluegrass, thoughtful indie rock, and classic pop twitches a la early Beatles, they bring their audience timeless music that is at once unquestionably danceable and haltingly listenable. The rough cut of their first album, Piñata, was so well received that it was then mastered by Kramer (renown producer and former Butthole Surfer), and landing them multiple national tours and on the bill with music acts such as The Avett Brothers. The band’s sophomore album Run to the Millwas released February of 2010.

The Portland Music Foundation will live stream the showcase to Bayside Bowl, in its hometown of Portland, ME so those who can’t make the trip can enjoy the show.

Board members of The Portland Music Foundation are comprised of a diverse spectrum of the individuals working in the music industry and living in Portland, ME. Board members include Grammy award-winning mastering engineer Adam Ayan who works at Gateway Mastering, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music and personal manager to the late James Brown, Program Director of WCYY and WBLM Herb Ivy, Lauren Wayne, talent buyer for the historic State Theater, among others in the fields of management, booking, recording and marketing.

Last year the Portland Music Showcase at CMJ was held at Trash Bar in Brooklyn. This year’s Sullivan Hall Showcase marks the 2nd year The Portland Music Foundation has given local talent the opportunity to play for international tastemakers, press, and industry professionals.

The showcase will be on Thursday October 20th at Sullivan Hall (18+) in NYC. Admission is $10. Get tickets here!
